The Power of Conscious Breath

Breathing is something that happens automatically and we usually just let happen involuntarily. Your yoga practice may be the only place where you do give your breath some conscious attention. Coming back to mindful breath a few times throughout your regular day can be so beneficial.

breathe2When we focus on the breath, we make what is normally an unconscious action conscious.  This can be incredibly powerful and healing. Deliberate inhalations and help energize the body, calm the mind and release toxins. Breathing can—in an instant—take us out of our negative and reactive thought patterns, and help release fear, while grounding us in the present moment.

Breathing consciously can also help give us greater clarity through connecting the physical, emotional and mind layers of the body. All eventually leading to decision making that is more aligned with the true self.

The best way to see the benefits of conscious breath is to try running a little experiment on yourself. Spend two minutes just observing your normal breath. Notice how your breath feels – is it long or short, deep or shallow? Also discern how you are feeling as you pay attention to your breath.  Do this a few times throughout your day over a week or so and see what, if anything happens.
